Pentagon Investigation Concludes Defense Secretary Put Troops in Jeopardy with Signal Chat.

A highly anticipated Department of Defense report has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth breached official protocols by sharing secret intelligence in a Signal messaging chat, according to a person briefed on the findings.

Details of the Incident

The online conversation in question contained particulars about a planned air attack in Yemen targeting Houthi militants. This discussion was revealed after a reporter for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other individuals in the group allegedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The report focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants do not work at the Pentagon.

Signal is a commercially offered messaging app that was not authorized for transmitting sensitive material.

Serious Threat to Forces

The internal investigation found that the information shared by Hegseth was classified and could have endangered the safety of US service members if it had been obtained by a foreign enemy force.

Notably, the document also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to downgrade the information he shared, though it was unclear whether he actually did so.

Hegseth's Response

The source said that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the investigators. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his response, Hegseth claimed he only shared information that would not have risked lives or compromised the mission. He further stated that he had the right to downgrade information and viewed the inspector general to be partisan.

Future Actions

The finalized investigation has been shared with Congress. An publicly releasable copy is expected to be released in the coming days.
